NEMA 250-4X

Manufacturer of GRP/FRP of Enclosures and Kiosks in UAE

What is the standard?

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is the largest trade association of electrical equipment manufacturers in the United States and publishes more than 600 standards, application guides, white papers, and technical papers relative to the industry. Its 450 members companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission, distribution, control, and end use of electricity. The classification NEMA 4X is applicable to GRP enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against access to hazardous parts inside the enclosure. It is the highest NEMA classification given to enclosures that are weatherproof and suitable for outdoor with an additional level of protection against corrosion.

How is it tested?

The GRP enclosure is tested to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and windblown dust), the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water), and the external formation of ice on the enclosure. The tests are conducted in an environmental simulation lab where the formation of ice is simulated by spraying water at a temperature of 0℃ - 3℃ in a chamber at 2 ℃. The enclosure is physically tested thereafter for damage and any ingresses. For the ingress of water, the GRP enclosure is subjected to a water spray of 65 gallons per minute from a one inch diameter hose connected to a water pump. The NEMA 4X test methodology and classification is equivalent to the British standard EN 60529 - IP65 and UL 50 and UL 508.

Electrical Enclosure Types – Non Hazardous Location Environmental Rating Standards Comparison

NEMA and UL are standards writing organizations. The ratings are based on similar application descriptions and performance expectations. UL requires testing for compliance by qualified evaluators independent of the manufacturer. NEMA does not require independent testing and leaves compliance up to the manufacturer.

Where is it tested?

Our enclosures are shipped and type tested at independent testing laboratories in the United States in order to certify their compliance to the American standards. Clearly, NEMA certification is most commonly demanded for the supply in the U.S; however it is frequently requested by American contractors operating in the Oil and Gas sector in the Middle East.
